JKA Zero Energy Goal

zero energy goal

This 3,200 square foot residence for a family of five is designed to hit the trifecta of contemporary homes: zero energy use, long term freedom from maintenance and budget friendly.  Currently rated at a HERS index of 6.  We are looking forward to tweaking the details and hitting our intended goals.

Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to the HERS Efficient Reference Home of 100. Thus a home with a HERS Index of 6 is 94% more energy efficient than the HERS Efficient Reference Home.

JKA Designs Cape Cod Summer Home – Barnstable MA

Light, views and air seem obvious goals, however the challenge here was to maximize the ocean views to the benefit of almost every room in the house. To achieve this, a grouping of four gable structures of varying lengths were employed to create a stepped rear facade, which opens views to the water. The orientation also provides desirable shaded areas for long summer days. A band of horizontal natural-weathering cedar planks creates a plinth for the home to rest, as well as properly address the flood zone in which the home resides. 4,500 SF new construction, 5 Bed, 4 1/2 Bath, Open Kitchen/Dining/Family, Study, Screened Porch, Mudroom, Swimming Pool, Hot Tub, Elevated Deck.  Architect of record is Hutker Architects. Design Architect is Joseph Kennard Architects.

JKA Design Certified with HERS index of “24″ – New Home

The HERS Index is a scoring system established by the Residential Energy Services Network (RESNET) in which a home built to the specifications of the HERS Reference Home (based on the 2004 International Energy Conservation Code) scores a HERS Index of 100, while a net zero energy home scores a HERS Index of 0. The lower a home’s score, the more energy efficient it is in comparison to the HERS Reference Home.

Each 1-point decrease in the HERS Index corresponds to a 1% reduction in energy consumption compared to the HERS Reference Home. Thus a home with a HERS Index of 85 is 15% more energy efficient than the HERS Reference Home and a home with a HERS Index of 24 is 76% more energy efficient.
